Born and raised in Brisbane Qld, Robert Hackwood has emerged as one of the most mature professional atheletes to break into the motorsport industry. Starting from a young age, Robert had a keen eye for motorsport and commited his early years to developing the necessary skills and attributes required to be a successful racing car driver. He worked hard and succeeded through highschool at Redlands College where he was honoured as the School Captain in 2004. Without the opportunity to enter the cut throat world of go-kart competition, Robert sought a job at Terry Skene's Kingston Park Raceway, a popular hire kart track just South of Brisbane. Here he developed his skill to "drive to the car" due to daily driving a mix of different karts. Hackwood still owns the lap record set in 2006. Robert left school to study Mechanical Engineering at the Queensland University of Technology with one intention in mind, motorsport. Robert quickly become an integral member of the newly formed QUT Motorsport team which competed in the distinguished Formula SAE competition. A natural team leader, Robert was charged with the testing and development of the QUT FSAE car, and combined with experienced engineers to produced a winning car. In 2007, Robert met student Jim Reardon and combined forces to enter the QUT MX-3 car into the Tighe Cams Mt Cotton Hill Climb Series. Without any prior experience on the circuit, Robert stunned the local hillclimb community with the raw aggression, speed and control attributed to his style and quickly became a headline grabbing entrant in the series. Robert and engineer Jim Reardon were invited to contest the Australian Hill Climb Championships held at the Mt Cotton track, and on the first day of competition broke the long standing class record and neared the famed 40sec mark. With only 600cc on tap, the team of Hackwood and Reardon soon became immortalised in the lavish history of the Mt Cotton club. Following the successful run in time trail events, it was time to move into circuit racing, and was offered a drive in the competitive Queensland Improved Production Championship by Graphic Skills Racing's Phil Laird in a Mazda RX3. While perhaps an ideal introduction to circuit racing, Hackwood battled reliablity problems but not without experiencing some of his greatest memories behind the wheel of a racing car. Without the funds to instantly pursue the next step in his motorsport career, Robert spent 2009 training and gathering funds needed to make a return to single seat racing in the Australian Formula Ford Championship. In October 2009 Robert married Kate in a beach wedding on beautiful Stradbroke Island. Following a week long honey moon on Hamilton Island, the pair returned refreshed and commited to re-establishing one of the most promising names in the future of Australian motorsport. In 2010 Robert drove Jim Reardon's Spectrum 012. Taking delivery in August 2010, Robert impressed car designer Mike Borland of Borland Racing Developments. He is extensively supported by his close family and friends, and has surrounded himself with industry leading professionals who are all on hand to make sure that Robert always race's to the best of his ability.
